Ep. 09 | Our Top 10 Postpartum Must-Haves and Why

Nkiru’s Top 5 Postpartum Must-Haves

My Breastfriend Nursing Pillow

  1. Liked: Great back support unlike other nursing pillows I tried. I was able to work on other some other things while nursing.

  2. Recommend: I’d recommend for its comfortability and convenience

Moby Wrap - Color: Charcoal

  1. Liked: Extremely convenient to wear baby around the house, getting things done, or going for a walk.

  2. Recommend: It’s comfortable, and you can be completely hands free. Tip - buy a dark color because of baby spit ups as it doesn’t show up as well as it would on a lighter color.

Earth mama Organic Soothing Nipple Butter

  1. Liked: Super soothing and calming for the skin, my go-to balm for cracked nipples from breastfeeding.

  2. Recommend: Fast healing balm that healed cracked nipples within 24 hours.

Aden and Anais Products

Swaddle Blankets

Burp Cloths

  1. Liked: Soft blankets that get even softer after every wash. The burp cloths were very durable and the muslin material is highly absorbent.

  2. Recommend: Extremely soft and absorbent, and can use for pretty much every spill, spit up, or drool. Also, swaddle blankets are so versatile! Can use for tummy time or playtime as well.

Gerber Organic Long Sleeve Onesies

  1. Liked: Long sleeves were necessary since it was fall/winter during Sienna’s newborn stage.

  2. Recommend: Easy, convenient, nice as an under layer, and they have the organic version now.

Krista’s Top 5 Postpartum Must-Haves

Halo Bassinet Swivel Sleeper

  1. Liked: The Halo Bassinet was great because it allowed us to co-sleep with out having our daughter in our bed. I feel like this would be a great option for parents who are heavy sleepers. I also love how easy it make middle of the night feedings, especially when I was newly postpartum and still in pain.

  2. Recommend: The height is adjustable so regardless of how tall your bed is it will still sit flesh with the edge. The bassinet can rotate 360 degrees and glides very smoothly, which was so handy when I needed to move the bassinet without waking her. It has a sturdy base, which was my biggest concern, and the sidewall lowers and returns automatically and can be locked into place for when the baby gets bigger.

Baby K’tan Baby Carrier

  1. Liked: This was my preferred carrier when My daughter was 0-5 months. Because she was so petite, this held her nicely and mimicked how I carried her in womb. My favorite part about this carrier was it totally dummy proof and didn’t require a lot of tying so both my husband and I felt comfortable carrying her in it. For new parents still getting comfortable with holding a tiny baby, this carrier was very easy to put baby into and I never felt like she was slipping. Lastly, it was easy to breastfeed while still wearing the carrier.

  2. Recommend: It’s 100% cotton and machine washable which is great for a breastfeeding baby, because spit up happens. There is no tying or wrapping needed so you can literally take it out of the bag and use it without a learning curve. Also, it is super compact and light weight which was wonderful when I was already having to carry so much.

Buffy Body Butter Bar from Lush

  1. Liked: OK, so this is hands down my favorite product I used in both pregnancy and postpartum because it was a small luxury for ME! It was very soothing and exfoliating for my stretching and itchy breasts and belly and it smelled great but wasn’t a strong smell (great for pregnant women).

  2. Recommend: The bar is made from all natural ingredients and is very hydrating and exfoliating. it is an inexpensive little luxury for mama and lasts a long time!

Barefoot Dreams Bamboo Chic Lite Sweater

  1. Liked: The most comfortable sweater I’ve ever owned and it the material feels like a magical combination of butter and silk on your skin. It is a little heavy but in a cozy way and can be dressed up or down. I also loved this sweater because it wasn’t tight fitting but was still flattering. I wore this when I was newly postpartum and I still wear this 2 1/2 year later and it looks great even though I had 30 lbs difference from then to now.

  2. Recommend: I recommend this for all of the above mentioned and because this sweater doubled as a nursing cover and blanket while traveling (especially when on the airplane). It was perfect unexpected all in one and I can sill use it. Lastly, it is machine washable and machine dry-able.

Womens Nursing Pull Over Seamless Sleep Bra - 2 Pk

  1. Liked: These were my go to for sleeping and sometimes even for during the day, ok.. I lived in these. It was light weight, fit well but wast too snug and was great for breastfeeding. They fit my every changing breast size and stayed snug even with all the washes.

  2. Recommend: I recommend for the above mentioned, as well as the fact that they are cheap, come in a two pack and can be found at Target (Your welcome, now you have a good excuse to go to target, not that you need one!).

Ep. 03 Breastfeeding: Our Experiences, Tips, & What We Wish We Knew | Resources

Ep. 03 Resources

Hey Mamas! As promised, here is a list of the resources we each used to help make breastfeeding a more enjoyable experience. We hope you find these to be as helpful as we did!

Krista’s List:

  • http://kellymom.com - A great resource for all breastfeeding and parenting questions. This was my go to site when I had any questions.

  • Medela Soothing Gel Pads for Breastfeeding - These were my saving grace while I learned how to breastfeed. For additional relief, I highly recommend placing them in the refrigerator prior to using them. Your nipples will thank you!

  • Medela Tender Care Lanolin - This is 100% safe for both mama and baby and you don’t need to wipe it off before breastfeeding. I used this as well as Organic Coconut oil to help with cracked nipples. Either of the those in combination with the soothing gel pads provided the best relief for me.

  • Breastfeeding Cover - While I didn’t use a nursing cover for too long due to my little one throwing it off me, I did really like this one because it allowed me to see what I was doing while we were working through latch issues and I loved that I was able keep eye contact with her and still be covered. Also, as an added bonus, it was really light weight and didn’t take up a lot of room in my diaper bag.

  • Lactation Cookies- While this isn’t the recipe I used, it is almost exactly the same minus the addition of a teaspoon of cinnamon. They are so yummy, enjoy!

  • Now Brewer’s Yeast - This was the Brewers Yeast I used when making my lactation cookies. I was able to find this at Market of Choice in Portland, OR but I am sure you can find this at any natural grocer local to you.

  • Bob’s Red Mill Flaxseed Meal - I am sure any Flaxseed Meal would be fine in this recipe but choose this one when making my lactation cookies due to it being an Portland based company and I love all their products.

Nkiru’s List:

  • My Breastfriend Nursing Pillow - This nursing pillow was everything for me when I wanted to get some work done on my computer or even when I just wanted to give my arms and neck a rest.

    • Best part: It provides comfortable support for my back. My baby liked it too. It was so comfortable for her that she would fall asleep pretty easily on it!

  • Bamboobies - These reusable nursing pads were very helpful for me at night when I would leak the most. They also have disposable nursing pads as another option. I used the overnight nursing pads that came in two pairs, but you can buy as much as six pairs.

    • Best part: They are reusable and made from bamboo, which is highly absorbent.

  • Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter - You guys, I LOVE this product and this brand. I cannot speak highly enough about this nipple butter and several other products of this brand that I’ve used. This nipple butter is so soothing and healing, I almost always carried it with me everywhere I went. Also, it lasts for so long - the whole 11 months, almost 12 months that I breastfed.

    • Best part: This product is filled with herbs and other natural ingredients, and doesn’t contain added fillers, chemicals, or other harsh ingredients, so it is safe enough for the baby to eat (unless allergic, check ingredients), which means I didn’t have to wipe the ointment off before breastfeeding.

  • Organic Virgin Coconut Oil - THIS. I’ve used coconut oil for pretty much everything skin related for a long time, so it was no surprise that I would use it for my stretching skin when I was pregnant, but it was also very useful for cracked nipples. I prefer the Trader Joe’s brand, but really you can find organic virgin coconut oil pretty much anywhere these days. The Kirkland brand from Costco, which is also an organic virgin coconut oil is also good.

    • Best part: It’s safe to use on baby as well!

  • Aussie Bites - This was a great quick, on the go snack. They are packed with healthy fats - nuts and seeds, as well as a good amount of fiber, and a ton of Omega-3 fatty acids.

    • Best part: It’s healthy and pretty filling.

  • Mother’s Milk Tea - This tea is great for supporting lactation. I used it to help with my milk supply, while also doing my best to eat a well nourished diet and enough for my baby and I. If you listened to Ep. 03 of the podcast, when we dive into breastfeeding, you’ll know that keeping my supply up was a struggle for me. This tea helped with this.

    • Best part: With this tea in combination of what I was already doing - incorporating more healthy fats, fiber, and protein in my diet, I really did notice an increase in my milk supply.
